The first prisoners have arrived at a new jail in East Yorkshire.

HMP Millsike has been built on land next to the existing maximum security Full Sutton prison, near Stamford Bridge, and will eventually house almost 1,500 category C inmates.

It is the size of 39 football pitches and comes fitted with security technology to combat smuggling of drugs and phones, including body scanners, CCTV and reinforced windows to deter drones, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said.

According to the MoJ, the number of prisoners is due to steadily increase each week to ensure a "safe and stable ramp-up process".

The ministry said the "strictly monitored" process would be "adjusted or paused" should the safety or stability of the prison require it.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood officially opened the prison at the end of March.

About 600 jobs are expected to be created at Millsike, which includes workshops and training facilities aimed at getting offenders into work on release.
